Buyer's Guide · 2026
Three good systems, built for three different beekeepers. Here is an honest side-by-side — metrics, sampling rate, off-grid range, AI analysis, and price — so you can pick the right one, including where each competitor beats us.

Full disclosure up front: we make ApisNode, so we have a horse in this race. But a comparison that only flatters the author is useless, and beekeepers see through it. So this page is written to be the one we would want to read before spending money — competitors' real strengths included. If you need a hive weight scale, for instance, we'll tell you to look at BroodMinder, because we don't make one.
All three systems below are legitimately good at what they were designed for. The question isn't "which is best" — it's "which is best for your apiary." Start with the table, then read the honest notes underneath.
| ApisNode | BroodMinder | ApisProtect | |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-hive metrics | 30 — temp, humidity, pressure, tilt, 10-band acoustics, 6-band vibration, 10-step gas/VOC most signal | Temp & humidity; +weight, +entrance flight/acoustics via add-ons modular — buy per sensor | Temp, humidity, CO₂, sound, acceleration |
| Sampling interval | Every 5 minutes highest resolution | Hourly drops to 1-min during temperature events | Periodic (continuous monitoring) |
| Acoustic / vibration | 10-band sound + 6-band vibration spectrum, every reading | Entrance flight + acoustic activity (BeeDar add-on) | Sound + accelerometer |
| Gas / air quality | 10-step VOC heater-scan fingerprint + barometric pressure unique | — | CO₂ |
| Hive weight scale | Not offered we focus on in-hive signal, not weight | Yes — W / W3 / W5 scales their strength | — |
| Connectivity | Sub-GHz LoRa to a gateway — no WiFi at the hive | Bluetooth (walk-up); hub / WiFi / cellular add-ons for remote | Built-in cellular + satellite (self-contained) |
| Works off-grid | Yes — one gateway (~2 mi range) uplinks many hives efficient at range | Remote needs a hub, WiFi, or cellular per site | Yes — each unit is independent |
| AI health analysis | Daily plain-language AI report per colony, grounded in bee science | Charts, alerts & analytics (membership) | ML insights (queen status, pests, swarm risk) |
| Over-the-air updates | Yes — firmware over LoRa / WiFi | Firmware via app | Managed platform |
| Data & openness | Anonymized data feeds the Open Apiary Project non-profit; reports public | Your data, cloud storage & membership tiers | Commercial analytics platform |
| Price model | Free kit for selected US beekeepers via the Open Apiary Project trial | À la carte, ~$48–$260 per device + optional membership | ~$235 per unit + ~$5/month subscription |
| Best for | Off-grid apiaries wanting deep in-hive signal + AI reports; research & citizen science | Hobbyists & sideliners who want modular, proven, buy-what-you-need | Commercial operations monitoring hives at scale |

The deepest look inside the hive: 30 metrics every 5 minutes, including spectral acoustics, vibration, and a gas/VOC fingerprint no other system on this page captures — turned into a daily AI health report.
The most established, approachable ecosystem. Modular and affordable: start with a $48 temperature sensor and add humidity, a weight scale, or entrance monitoring as you go. A big, friendly community and years of refinement.
Purpose-built for large commercial operations. Self-contained units with cellular and satellite uplinks drop into existing hives and report to a machine-learning platform focused on operational alerts across thousands of colonies.
Choose BroodMinder if you're a hobbyist or sideliner who wants to start cheap, add sensors over time, and especially if a hive weight scale matters to you — tracking nectar flow and stores by weight is its home turf, and we don't compete there.
Choose ApisProtect if you run a commercial operation and need self-contained, cellular/satellite units across many yards with an enterprise platform behind them.
Choose ApisNode if you want the richest possible picture of what's happening inside the hive — acoustics, vibration, and air chemistry, not just temperature — at 5-minute resolution, delivered as a daily AI report, running off-grid without WiFi at the hive. And if you're a US beekeeper, you may be able to get the kit free through the Open Apiary Project.
Talk is cheap in spec tables. We publish our monitored colonies' real, daily AI health reports in public — and we wrote up three months of them, chart by chart, in 90 Days Inside a Beehive. It's the fastest way to judge whether ApisNode's depth is what your apiary needs.
Selected US beekeepers receive a complete ApisNode kit at no cost through The Open Apiary Project, in exchange for contributing anonymized data to pollinator research.
